How Brazilian Public Figures Aligned with NGOs Used Facebook Live to Lift Black Voices

The months-long protest demonstrations against racial injustice across the United States in 2020 became one of the largest movements in the nation’s history, uniting people around the world. In Brazil, this unprecedented support gave conversations about racism greater strength and space. Despite representing 56% of Brazil’s population, the Black community has been under-represented in many spaces and disproportionately affected by COVID-19. To express their solidarity, many public figures joined the #BlackLivesMatter movements, using their platforms to create a space for the Black community to tell their stories and experiences.
Conversations about diversity took over Facebook and Instagram in efforts to amplify more Black voices. The Identities Institute of Brazil (ID_BR) — a non-profit organization committed to accelerating the promotion of racial equality — has been using Facebook Live over the past few months to continue their mission in a pandemic. Reaching over 498K views*, ID_BR partnered with TV actress Cris Vianna to discuss the challenges Black women face in today’s society on Facebook Live. This initiative brought a spotlight on the International Afro-Latin American, Afro-Caribbean and Diaspora Women’s Days, generating a conversation about the employability of Black women during the COVID-19 pandemic. https://www.facebook.com/formedia/blog/how-brazilian-public-figures-aligned-with-ngos-used-facebook-live-to-lift-black-voices
